Cumston Hall requires many improvements to ... preserve its historical character and aesthetic features. |
A 5,000-square-foot building addition. The original portion of the building designed as a free community library in 1900 is seriously overcrowded today. The library addition will provide 3,500 square feet for library expansion. This extra space and the better use of existing space will allow for: >> a new first floor space for a youth and young adult
section Handicapped access. While the original building design included a magnificent theater filling the entire second floor of the hall, the only access is by stairs. The building addition will contain a new ramp entrance and an elevator to allow access to both the theater and library by people using wheelchairs or walkers. Bathroom Additions and Plumbing Upgrades. Cumston Hall has a 250-seat theater and only one public bathroom. With large audiences attending the Theater At Monmouth's productions, it has become necessary for the Theater to rent portable toilets during the summer months and position them on the grounds outside the building -- a major inconvenience, particularly in inclement weather. These facilities are not available for the popular productions of school and Community Theater during the rest of the year. The building addition will include bathroom facilities meeting code requirements. A new heating and ventilating system. The original heating system included furnaces for seasonal heating for the theater, the library, and the caucus hall. Repairs have been made to the system and minor upgrades were accomplished as funds became available, and early on, the Theater At Monmouth added air conditioning to the theater for comfort during the warm summer evenings. However, as the use of the building has expanded to nearly daily year-round use, the heating and ventilating system must be upgraded to meet the increased demand. The new system will also help to preserve the Hall's historic features by providing improved climate and moisture control. A building-wide fire suppression system. A modern sprinkler system and allied equipment must be installed throughout the existing building and new addition. An electrical upgrade. To bring the electrical facilities to code for public safety and to address the increased demand of theatrical usage and new electronic library devices, the building's electrical system must be improved. |
