 Today, Cumston Hall is bursting at the seams with activity. On an annual basis, close to 42,000 people visit Cumston Hall. It is the home to the Theater At Monmouth, which has performed in repertory every summer since 1970. It is used year round by three school drama groups, the Monmouth Community Players, a community theater group, the Cumston Library Association, the Friends of Cumston Hall, and many other civic and community groups. Over 125 theatrical performances are produced and staged here annually. At last count, Cumston Hall is actively used at least 300 days a year. For over 100 years Cumston Hall has supported our community and drawn visitors to Central Maine. It is timely and fitting that we now come to the support of Cumston Hall, after a century in constant use. While its timber frame is as solid as it was on its June 1900 dedication, the building will require major repair, restoration and expansion to keep up with the coming century's increasing need. In addition, Cumston Hall requires many improvements to comply with current regulatory codes and standards and to preserve its historical character and aesthetic features. Friends of Cumston Hall was formed in 1996 to assist the Town by privately raising the additional funds necessary to renovate Cumston Hall, expand the Cumston Public Library and build an endowment for the long-term maintenance and preservation of this historic treasure. Its Board of Directors includes representatives from the Cumston Public Library, the Theater At Monmouth, the Monmouth Community Players, three school drama clubs, the Town's Board of Selectmen and other members of the public. |
